Commissioned content: SCORM content published as HTML5, covering two areas of Business & Administration: understanding employer organisations; employee rights & responsibilities.

Project contact: Richard Sharples

Richard Sharples wrote this of his experiences:

The Apprentice Academy developed two modules focused on the needs of apprentices working towards the level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship framework. The modules were developed using Articulate Storyline 2 as this enabled them to be accessed by a range of devices and used off line with the Articulate player app for ios. The modules covered Employee Rights and Responsibilities and Understanding Employer Organisations.

The interactive learning resources for skills project helped colleagues at The Apprentice Academy to better understand the process of producing shareable interactive digital resources. One colleague commented that: ‘the project helped me to understand the differences between producing a worksheet or PowerPoint presentation for use with my apprentices versus producing a resource that could be used by an apprentice without the input of a trainer and could also be shared with other providers.’ The process of moving from storyboards to working prototypes, collecting user feedback and through a sequence of review cycles was something that was new to trainer assessors. Experiencing that process has helped us to develop new skills and a better understanding of the expectations of apprentices and our team.

The project also helped us to understand the different ways in which content could be presented, how feedback could be provided to support learning and the considerations that we needed to make for accessibility. Richard’s experience in building resources was invaluable and his focus on ‘what will the learner be able to do after completing the module’, helped us to build modules that avoid the click, read, click, read, quiz approach. We developed modules that help the apprentices to focus on ‘real’ business tasks, such as report writing, while learning and generating evidence for their qualifications. Working together to produce the modules was very powerful in terms of staff development, we now have much greater capability to understand what we like, don’t like and the steps involved in developing digital resources for skills.

Project summary: This digital resource will be developed to meet the needs of Level 1 Business Administration Apprentices. It contains two Scorm packages developed in Articulate Storyline. These packages cover the unit Understanding Employer Organisations and the topic of Employee Rights and Responsibilities. Each package includes online learning activities, downloadable off-line activities, scenarios and 30 self-marking questions. The employee rights and responsibilities package covers: understanding the role of organisations and industries and understanding employers’ expectations and employees’ rights and obligations. The package focussed on understanding employer organisations covers: understanding organisational structures (differences between structures, functions of structures and features of legal structures) and understanding the organisational environment (internal and external influences, models of analysis, the importance of change in business).
